Lena Horne and Lynn Redgrave

by Tony Dayoub

I'm not as well-versed in the lives and work of these two esteemed actresses as I'd like to be. But each has made an impression on me throughout their careers. So rather than ignore their passing (as I almost did with Ms. Redgrave), I offer you links to others' appraisals of them.

The Self-Styled Siren selects two telling anecdotes referring to the undeserved struggles Lena Horne endured while working in the studio system before the advent of the civil right era.

Lena Horne died yesterday at the age of 92.

Recommended Films - Cabin in the Sky, Stormy Weather, Death of a Gunfighter

The most comical of the legendary Redgrave clan, Lynn Redgrave could give the impression that she took her work far less seriously than her brethren, as Glenn Kenny discusses in his piece. Anyone who actually believed that would be wrong.

Lynn Redgrave died May 2nd, at the age of 67.

Recommended Films - Georgy Girl, The Happy Hooker, Shine, Gods and Monsters, Spider, Kinsey

That is a photo of Dorothy Dandridge up there. Though also a beautiful and amazing black actress... you might want to replace it with a photo of Lena Horne.

Thank you. I had a small doubt, tried to verify, but couldn't find anything to clear it up. I corrected it.

Y'know, by the time I showed up, the picture had been replaced so I didn't see what picture of Dorothy Dandridge it was--but for what it's worth, when I went to do a post on Ms. Horne, I found a great, sexy picture of Lena Horne, too. Too sexy. I got skeptical. But it came from a seemingly-reliable website.

So I did a search on Dorothy Dandridge and that still came up!

Somewhere, someone once made a comparison of both women for me, explaining that Dandridge was like the slinkier version of Lena. I think it was that comparison that made my radar go off.

The weirdest part: I too settled on this great picture of Lena Horne for my post (http://peelslowlynsee.wordpress.com/2010/05/10/lena-horne-id-marry-her/).

Anyway, I'm new to your blog and am enjoying what I see so far. Thanks!
